Nanny who stabbed two children to death will be sentenced

Yoselyn Ortega was sentenced to life in prison on two counts of first-degree murder and consecutive sentences of 25 years each on two counts of second-degree murder for fatally stabbing 6-year-old Lucia and 2-year-old Leo in their home on October 25, 2012.

She wept and apologized to the family.

The children's mother was out with the couple's third child at the time. Their father was out of town.

Yoselyn Ortega appears in Manhattan Criminal Courtroom on March 8, 2013, during her first court appearance on charges that she killed two children she was hired to care for.

Unable to contact the 55-year-old nanny, the paediatrician rushed home, where Ortega was supposed to have taken Leo for a nap.

"The defendant's son, Jesus Frias, sat in front of a traumatized jury, winking and grinning at the jury members as if it were some kind of reality TV show he wants to win", the mom said. "This defendant to this day has shown no remorse".

Following the decision, Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance said in a statement that Ortega was "remorseless" and commended the courage of the Krims. She then tried to kill herself.

Kevin Krim said the crime caused an "obliterating darkness" to descend on his family, robbing them of "the brightest and warmest of lights". "They are two stars now who will always lead us forward".

"I ask for a great deal of forgiveness".

At her trial, jurors had listened for weeks to grim testimony about the violent killings of the children. To God. To Marina. The two children had been stabbed multiple times with a kitchen knife, reports The New York Times.

Judge Carro was not moved. Ortega, who's from the Dominican Republic, had been recommended by her sister, a nanny for another NY family, and her background and references were faked by her family.

"There were blood curdling screams from a woman", Rima Starr, a neighbor, told the New York Times that night, adding that after hearing the screams she saw Marina in the building's lobby, with a towel over her head and Nessie, her surviving child, in her arms.

Kevin also testified in heartbreaking detail about learning that two of his children were dead and seeing their bodies at the hospital.

Ortega claimed to hear the voice of the devil and was following his instructions.

"She did it intentionally with a full understanding of exactly what it was she was doing - every stab, every slash", Mr. Silberg, the prosecutor, said during closing arguments last month.

Ortega had worked for the Krims for some two years before she killed their babies.
