Saturday Is 'Stamp Out Hunger' Food Drive

"We've probably had close to 40 to 50 people volunteering here today, it's just a nice opportunity to gather together and give back to the community".

The annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive is an effort involving the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 828 and Hoosier Hills Food Bank. Local area food banks are trying to cut those numbers down but they can't do it alone. Food collected from Monroe County residents will then be transported to HHFB.

We got a look at the haul here in Sarasota as it was handed over to All Faiths Food Bank, which counts on these donations for it's summer food program. "Our local Kiwanis Club members will still help us deliver the food from the Post Office to the Interfaith Food Closet, and we appreciate that".

Begun in 1993, Stamp Out Hunger is the biggest single-day food drive in the nation, harvesting 1.6 billion pounds of food since it started.

If you missed your letter carrier, but still want to donate, the United State Postal Service says it will keep those donation bins out at their offices a little longer.

In York County, 20-local food pantries will benefit from the donations collected on Saturday.

"There's always a need for food", says Aubrey Clark, Food Sourcing and Facilities Manager for the West Ohio Food Bank.

"It means a lot to them and it puts food in the kids bellies", New Horizons Volunteer Coordinator Maddie Smith said.

Some of the items most in need are canned meats, canned fruits and vegetables, cereal and juice.

Past year the pantry collected 150 pallets of food, according to Howard. Those making donations are asked to avoid placing items in glass containers.
