Rain forces Ireland one more day for Test debut against Pakistan

William Porterfield has thanked those that have paved the way for him and his Ireland colleagues to make Test history on Friday.

The first day in Test cricket for Ireland's men fell foul of some thoroughly Irish weather as play at Malahide was abandoned without a single ball being bowled. But they were first awarded associate status back in 1993, and it has been a long, challenging road - both for those out in the middle and others in the background - to ensure Ireland received this recognition.

"But, as we have mentioned already ourselves among the squad, it would be pretty remiss of us if we didn't talk what had gone on before us, and not just in terms of the last five or 10 years, which everyone will probably remember the most, but also every cricketer who has ever played for Ireland, plus administrators off the field".

When you've waited as long as Ireland have to play your first Test match, another day's delay may not seem that significant.

"There have been a lot of people who have devoted a lot of their lives to making this moment happen".

"It would be great if we could play quite a few Tests a year, but it is not financially viable as it stands", the 33-year-old added.

Although both Ireland and Afghanistan were granted Test status by the International Cricket Council a year ago, neither of the newcomers can expect to be involved in full-length Test series any time soon.

Speaking to the media following the decision, Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom said that while it may have been possible to play for a couple of hours later in the day, he felt that it would be more "appropriate" to begin such an occasion on Saturday morning. Australia is the only team who won their first match. We've also seen that some PSL matches were held in Lahore and Karachi and were incident-free.
