The Boy Scouts Officially Change Their Name: They Are Dropping the "Boy"

To follow, the name of the older youth program for ages 11 through 17, previously known as "Boy Scouts", will be changed to "Scouts BSA".

"Cub Scouts is a lot of fun, and now it's available to all kids", Stephen Medlicott, the organization's national marketing group director of Boy Scouts of America.

"We are, and will remain, the first choice for girls and parents who want to provide their girls with opportunities to build new skills".

"Both groups, which have been at odds since the Boy Scouts chose to open its doors to girls, have been struggling with declining membership", USA Today reported.

At least 3,000 girls have already signed up for the Cub Scouts via its Early Adopter program allowing them to join before the 2018 open enrolment. In Jan. 2017, they announced they would accept transgender members. "It comes as scouting has seen a decline in participation, something officials hope the modernization effort will reverse", they continue. The organization says it has almost 2.3 million youth members between five and 21, a decrease from the 2.8 million members in 2012.

The Boy Scouts previous year opted to allow transgender boys to join. In its peak years, BSA had more than 4 million participants. "Scout me in celebrates the BSA's historic decision to serve families and welcome girls and boys to our programs", the organization stated on its website.

The new Scout Me In campaign rolling out now aims to create awareness for the rebranding and new gender-inclusive policy coming to scouting in America.

"We put the word girl in Girl Scouts, said Kathi Schutz, Community Engagement Coordinator for Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains. Take that from someone who knows", writes re porter David Whitley in a commentary for the Orlando Sentinel. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee deemed the Boy Scouts "effectively dead," adding that the Boy Scouts gave young men "an identity" and "there really is a difference between boys and girls and the way they think and the way they grow up".

It is also "ramping up a competitive campaign in response".

If people are concerned about the moral formation of boys and "making boys into men", Walsh said, "then you need to separate them from girls".

Many social media users also expressed differing opinions as the news trended on Twitter. Father Chris Miller tweeted: "As a former scout I will say you are dead to me", adding: "The goal of Scouts were to build boys into men".

UNITED STATES - The name "Boy Scouts" will be no more: the organization announced a huge change this morning.

In addition to the name change, the children participating in the program will be referred to as scouts instead of boy scouts.
