USA and United Kingdom issue joint alert warning of Russian cyber attacks

Sputnik spoke to David Schultz, political science professor at Hamline University, who gave his take on the current state of Russia-US relations and the consequences of the new sanctions if they are nevertheless to be introduced.

The air defense forces of Syria and Russian Federation is not impressed, none of the more than 100 shells fired by the U.S., Britain and France on the production facilities of the chemical substances in Syria.

Russian Federation has not responded to the accusations, but regularly denies any role in state-sponsored hacking. On the one hand this position is a surprise given that Trump does not seem to really stand behind this approach. The report came as the Trump administration pursues potential tariffs, negotiations and other restrictions to try to cut a massive trade deficit with China.

The Russians say 71 missiles were shot down by Syrian systems.

Meanwhile, media reports noted that the United Kingdom government has confirmed a "20-fold" increase in disinformation being spread by Kremlin-linked social media "bot" accounts since the United Kingdom, US and France attacked Syria's chemical weapons infrastructure on Saturday. Until the United States announced sanctions on Russian oligarchs earlier this month, however, the dollar had weakened by almost 4 percent against the Russian currency.

Military officials have long anxious that the first strike in any "kinetic" war (in which things are actually blown up) could very likely be a cyber strike, knocking out a nation's infrastructure and making it more hard for the nation to strike back against missiles and other hostile actions.

This is just the latest in a serious of escalating confrontations between Western Allies and Russian Federation, with both US President Trump and Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov recently stating that relations between the superpowers are worse than during the height of the Cold War.

May said a barrel bomb - a large container packed with fuel, explosives and scraps of metal - was used to deliver chemical weapons and that a regime helicopter hovered over the city at the time of the attack.

"Russian government activities continue to threaten our respective safety, security and the very integrity of our cyber ecosystem", said Jeanette Manfra, the UK National Protection and Programs Directorate (NPPD) Assistant Secretary for Cybersecurity and Communications. "Many of the techniques used by Russian Federation exploit basic weaknesses in network systems".

In the short term I do not see any forces leading to a de-escalation of tensions but certainly this is no comparison to the conflicts during the height of the Cold War.

The US raised concern at the worldwide chemical weapons agency.

He added: "Hopefully, someday we'll get along with Russian Federation and maybe even Iran, but maybe not".
