That, plus Robbie's supposed insistence that she wanted to work with a female director on the film, led Warner Bros.to tap Yan. The project for the independent Harley Quinn film is based on Birds of Prey, in which Quinn joins other crime fighters like Black Canary and Batgirl.

Harley Quinn has found her director.

This is an historic move for Warner Bros. and DC - and a definitive win over Marvel Studios. She made her feature film debut with this year's Dead Pigs, which screened at Sundance and won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Ensemble Acting at the 2018 festival. It is not confirmed if all of them will be characters in the film. The news comes just weeks after Warner Bros. and DC tapped director Ava DuVernay to adapt The New Gods. This one is being written by Christina Hodson, the screenwriter on the Bumblee Transformers spin-off and DC's Batgirl. She is still negotiating to star with Leo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. That's all very encouraging, especially to those of us who could've maybe done with 75% less gratuitous Harley Quinn ass-shots in Suicide Squad.

Warner Bros. knew Harley Quinn was a breakout character from Suicide Squad, and it's interesting to see that they've chose to go with Birds of Prey over Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens, or a Harley & Joker movie.
