Commonwealth Games closing ceremony panned, Beattie admits 'we got it wrong'

She added: "When you start to see the athletes that have come here and the standard that they are, we can compete with anyone anywhere".

The Premier said organisers should "hang their heads in shame" for not incorporating athletes in the televised part of the ceremony, a decision that lead to spectator walkouts.

"We have a disability, we are different but we are athletes".

As Canadian athletes marched through Carrara Stadium on Australia's Gold Coast during the closing ceremony of the 2018 Commonwealth Games, they were no doubt reflecting on their experience here, as well as what they learned about what they're capable of.

These Games - the first major multi-sport event to feature gender medal event equality - provided not only a platform for Canada's young, developing stars of tomorrow, it also showcased the strength of Canadian women athletes. They are there to see and to celebrate the athletes.

"Did we stuff it up? Yes". "Should they (the athletes) have been a part of the actual ceremony that was broadcast?"

The show continued with a performance by Ricki-Lee and The Koi Boys before Anthony Callea took the stage to perform "You Should be Dancing" accompanied by the athletes.

He took responsibility for the decision and said the angry reaction was "justified".

Channel Seven hosts Johanna Griggs and Basil Zempilas share their anger at the closing ceremony live on air. They made the decision not to show the flag bearers.

"People are thinking that Channel Seven has chosen not to show pictures of athletes or not to show the flagbearer, Kurt Fearnley, or other flagbearers", Griggs said.

"The organising committee together with the host broadcasters just didn't get it right". One can't expect world dominance at much tougher competitions such as Asian Games and far from it at the Olympics but the count at Commonwealth Games is an encouraging sign.

"We understand many people have been disappointed by tonight's closing ceremony and to be perfectly honest Jo, so have we been", Zempilas said.

"AFN 2018 season's developmental programmes were put to test at the Gold Coast and we bagged five medals at the Commonwealth Games within five months".

Large sections of seating were empty, while a number of athletes slipped away to the bar before the ceremony had reached its halfway point.

The veteran, who brought the curtain down on his career with a marathon gold on Sunday, was hopeful that the raised profile of the Para-athletes could also open a broader discussion about disability in Australian society.
