Tornado watch issued for Triangle, surrounding areas until 11 pm

Showers and thunderstorms producing heavy rainfall could bring 3 to 5 inches of rain on Saturday, with locally higher amounts possible, the Weather Service cautions.

It's Severe Weather Awareness Week, and as communities across the state test their sirens, one local farmer knows first-hand how important it is to be prepared.

In addition, subfreezing temperatures are expected Sunday and Monday mornings.

The Williamsburg County watch remains in effect until 11 p.m.

The primary threat will be wind gusts of 40 to 60 miles per hour, forecasters say. "Expect all modes of severe weather to be possible with large hail and isolated tornadoes initially". Another dozen outages were reported in Colleton County. Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching.

Tornado Warning: Take Action!

Much of the KVOE listening area was under a tornado watch, but that was canceled early with no tornado reports statewide.

The watch will be issued at 1:00 pm and the warnings will be issued at 1:45 pm.

The immediate forecast does not include the spring and summertime hazard, but rather a significant winter storm expected to arrive Friday afternoon. Flooding is listed as a lesser threat, with the exception of localized flooding from periods of heavy rain. At greatest risk today are vehicles, especially high-profile vehicles such as delivery trucks and 18-wheelers, on north-to-south and northwest-to-southeast oriented roads.

It goes without saying, Saturday has been a very busy day for meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls. The best chance for whiteouts will be late Friday night there.
