The fights began at 7:15 p.m. Sunday; the facility wasn't secured until 2:55 a.m. on Monday, prison officials say. He said 17 inmates required medical attention outside the prison.

Lee County Fire & Rescue says multiple agencies were called into assist with the "mass-casualty incident" at the prison.

The prison in Bishopville, South Carolina, about 60 miles northeast of Columbia, houses about 1,600 male inmates, according to the state's corrections department.

In February, inmate Robert Odell Brown was killed by another inmate at Lee Correctional Institution.

The 250 inmates taken to the hospital after assaults the past two years were almost double the rate from the two years before, the newspaper reported.

In March, inmates at the prison held an officer hostage after taking control of a dorm room, The State reported.
