Former FBI director Comey says Donald Trump 'morally unfit' to serve

'Slippery James Comey, a man who always ends up badly and out of whack (he is not smart!), will go down as the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!' Trump said at one point.

Comey described in great detail several conversations he had with Trump, telling Stephanopoulos of how the president asked for his loyalty and how that interaction and others reminded him of his time as a prosecutor in NY pursuing mob families, for whom loyalty to the boss and the organization were the only values that mattered. The interview aired Sunday night ahead of the April 17 release of Comey's book "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership".

Excerpts have already been widely reported, prompting President Donald Trump and his conservative allies to launch a furious attack on Comey.

Comey said he did not believe the news at first because he thought it was a trick.

Mr Trump also accused Mr Comey of giving up classified information, lying to congress and not confiscating the Democratic National Committee's server during the FBI's probe.

In the book, Comey likens Trump to a dishonest, ego-driven mob boss and says he demanded the then Federal Bureau of Investigation chief's personal pledge of loyalty - a damning account that has infuriated the president at a moment of intensifying legal pressure on other fronts.

Former FBI Director James Comey informed Congress of the move just days before the election, at the time Clinton had a strong advantage in opinion poles.

"I knew this was a no-win situation, this case".

"More and more lies", Comey said. "His "memos" are self serving and FAKE!" Trump said in a tweetstorm fired off Sunday before the interview.

Lynch says she was simply following long-standing Justice Department protocol against confirming or denying the existence of an investigation.

In a separate interview with USA Today, Comey - in a reference to salacious allegations contained in an unverified dossier created by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele - said it is hard "to explain some things without at least leaving your mind open" to the possibility that such compromising information exists.

"James Comey is a proven LEAKER & LIAR".

"One of the few areas of true bipartisan consensus in Washington is Comey has no credibility", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders wrote in a tweet accompanied by a video of Democrats slamming Comey.

Comey even describes Trump as a mob boss.running the oval office like a Godfather! I can not say that (Trump is not subject to Russian blackmail).

Comey, fired by Trump in May previous year, was anxious the president may be open to blackmail by Russian Federation given claims he was present when prostitutes urinated on each other during a 2013 Moscow visit.

Comey was also forceful in his condemnation of Trump's treatment of women and his embrace of white supremacists in the aftermath of last summer's neo-Nazi rally in Virginia. "I didn't actually think he came across as particularly genuine", she said.

Comey said he grew more wary when the chyron eventually changed to reflect that he had been fired. "I don't know", Comey said in the ABC News interview when asked whether Trump has been "compromised" by the Russians. Trump spoke in monologues, he said, but did not listen.

Comey says Steele's track record was why he felt it "was important that we try to understand [the dossier], and see what could we verify, what could we rule in or rule out".

"When the person that is supposed to lead the highest law enforcement agency in our country starts making decisions based on political environments instead of on what is right and what is wrong, it's a really unsafe position", she said.
