Israel says Syria brought airstrikes on itself

"A short time ago, I ordered the United States armed forces to launch precision strikes on targets associated with the chemical weapons capabilities of Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad", Trump said, in a prime-time address.

Syrian television reported that Syria's air defenses, which are substantial, responded to the attack.

Assad told his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani that a US -led attack on Saturday would increase Syria's resolve to "fight and crush terrorism in every inch" of the country.

The European Union on Saturday warned of fresh economic sanctions, should Syria continue to use chemical weapons. These are not the actions of a man.

The announcement two months after the incident comes the same week that Israel carried out another deadly airstrike on an Iran-operated air base in Syria's central Homs province, killing 14 people.

Iran's involvement in Syria in support of Assad has alarmed Israel, which has said it will counter any threat.

Emphasising that the strikes are directed at the Syrian regime, Mattis said in conducting these strikes, the United States has gone to great lengths to avoid civilian and foreign casualties. British Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron said the United Kingdom and France had joined in the attack, Reuters reported.

In a statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said the USA and its allies "will assume the responsibility for the regional and trans-regional consequences of this adventurism".

Stoltenberg said that the strike "will reduce the regime's ability to further attack the people of Syria with chemical weapons".

He says the Russian air defense assets in Syria monitored the strike but didn't engage any of the missiles. They are crimes of a monster instead. According to a Syrian government official, around 30 missiles were fired in the attack, and a third of them were shot down. The first air strike ordered by Trump occurred in April previous year.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, for his part, denounced the airstrikes as a "murder".

The Assad regime moved its aircraft and some military equipment inside Russian bases for protection, but what about the Iranians?

Trump's United Nations ambassador, Nikki Haley, said the president had not yet made a final decision, two days after he tweeted that Russian Federation should "get ready" because a missile attack "will be coming" at Moscow's chief Middle East ally.
