National Football League free agency rumors: Cardinals release Tyrann Mathieu

On Monday, the Arizona Cardinals released Tyrann Mathieu.

He played just two years of his five years, $62.5 million extension. He was a Pro Bowler and All-Pro in 2015 under Bettcher's first season as defensive coordinator in Arizona.

Whether or not the Giants should sign Mathieu will likely come down to price.

Newly released #AZCardinals CB Tyrann Mathieu messaged me: "I'm ready for the new challenge!" After a promising college career was cut short because of issues with marijuana, the Cardinals gambled on Mathieu the person and he did not let them down.

At the 2018 NFL Scouting Combine in late February, Cardinals general manager Steve Keim wouldn't commit to Mathieu being on the roster.

Mathieu was used mostly as a free safety in Arizona, but is about as versatile as modern defensive backs come.

The Cardinals are worse without Mathieu, but that must be taken into context with their overall situation.

With so many free agents departing from the Patriots over the last few days, it would be encouraging to see them take a shot at a young, motivated, high-potential player like Mathieu.

Winter weather advisory for region: Snow expected tonight and Tuesday
Orange and Ulster will see high temperatures in the upper 30s on Tuesday , while Sullivan can expect highs in the mid to low 30s. Snow could be heavy at times and winds could gust up to 35 miles per hour, which could reduce visibility and make driving hard .

Basically, it sounds like everyone in the AFC North is recruiting the Honey Badger.

Mathieu has said the night he spent in jail for that arrest changed his life.

Mathieu finished the 2017 season with 65 tackles, six tackles for loss, a sack, two interceptions, five passes defensed and one forced fumble.

Mathieu has only finished a full 16-game slate once in his National Football League career.

A second ACL injury prematurely ended Mathieu's 2015 season.

Smith played in 13 games for Cincinnati in 2017 and started eight.

The New England Patriots should look into signing the LSU defender formerly known as "Honey Badger".
