With Nitish's support, BJP hopes to snatch this Assembly seat


The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading on Araria Lok Sabha and Bhabua seats while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) is ahead in Jehanabad. The seat was earlier held by Yadav's father Mundrika Singh Yadav, who passed away previous year following prolonged illness.

Jehanabad: Earlier, RJD was leading in Jehanabad where Abhiram Sharma (JD-U) was trailing by 1340 votes.

AM: RJD candidate still leading with over 8000 votes.

This is the first electoral contest between RJD and Kumar-led Janata Dal (United), which split ways from the Grand Alliance and joined hands with the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) a year ago. On the other hand, RJD is leading in Jehanabad by 8,899 votes. The BJP is hopeful of retaining the Bhabua Assembly seat riding on a sympathy wave for Anand Bhushan Pandey, whose death at the age of 48, necessitated the bypoll.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP has fielded Kaushalendra Singh Patel from Phulpur and Upendra Dutt Shukla from Gorakhpur against SP's Pravin Nishad and Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel respectively. The results are expected to be declared by Thursday afternoon, according to an Election Commission official. Sarfaraz Alam has so far polled a total of 195,527 votes as against his BJP rival who has bagged 195,072 votes. Over 50 per cent voter turnout was recorded in the Jehanabad Assembly bypoll.

In Jehanabad, the RJD hopes to retain the Assembly seat that fell vacant after the death of Mundrika Yadav.

Both BJP and RJD candidates are locked in fierce electoral battle and Mr Alam appears to have now maintained a comfortable lead, even though several rounds of counting are yet to be taken up.
