Smart out indefinitely with torn thumb tendon

In search of another opinion on his injured right thumb, Celtics guard Marcus Smart is setting up a trip to NY.

Kyrie Irving will miss Wednesday's game against the Washington Wizards with knee soreness, according to ESPN's Chris Forsberg.

Smart and the Celtics weren't sure if the injury would require surgery as of Monday, and are hoping for some good news from the second opinion - whenever Smart may get that.

The C's hard-nosed guard injured his thumb during Boston's loss to the Indiana Pacers on Sunday night.

The Boston Celtics had a number of injuries dumped on them Monday, and the latest could be the worst. On top of it all, a hand injury will keep Marcus Smart out indefinitely once again ... Wojnarowski reports that the Celtics believe it is nothing more than knee tendonitis and that Irving is day-to-day and won't need to miss much time. Not only will Boston's defense suffer mightily in Smart's absence as it did earlier this season, but this makes the Celtics' bench extremely thin with only Terry Rozier, Marcus Morris and Greg Monroe being considered healthy among the normal unit.

Smart is averaging 10.2 points per game for the Celtics, and he is their best on-ball perimeter defender.
