Shoes on Capitol lawn honor kids killed in shootings since Sandy Hook

The shoes, which came from family members of victims, celebrities and citizens across the country, were placed early Tuesday morning and are expected to stay until late afternoon, the group said.

A 19-year-old with a semi-automatic rifle killed 17 people at a high school in Florida on February 14, sparking rage among parents, students and educators.

Donors to the shoe monument include actresses Susan Sarandon and Bette Midler, and talk show host Chelsea Handler.

According to, which has a map of planned protests across the country, there are also events planned for Clearwater, Pinellas Park, Brandon and Plant City. They represent every child that was killed by gunfire since the deadly shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012. @Avaaz says it represents the number of children who died bc of gun violence. That report found that approximately 1,300 children are killed by guns each and every year. "Culture is changing in America right now".

YouTube Apps For iOS And Android Get Dark Mode

Avaaz, a global organization that coordinates demonstrations for progressive causes, created the shoe installation on the southeast lawn at about 8 a.m.

The protest was the latest movement from activists groups to call on lawmakers to take steps to curb rampant shooting incidents in USA schools.

"When students protest at schools, our school staff will respond appropriately and allow our students to be heard", said Robert Runcie, superintendent for public schools for Broward County, Florida, where Parkland's Marjory Stoneman is located.

Many Canadian cities have marked the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women on December 6 with similar "shoe memorials".
