Fox Head Talks 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Reboot

Gary Newman, head of the Fox Television Group, said that a revival of "Buffy" is a popular discussion topic at the company. "I think if you look in our library, Buffy is probably the most ripe show we have for bringing back", he says. "And until Joss decides it's time, it won't happen". Of course, hardcore Buffy fans have been keeping up with the adult-aged Scoobies in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics, which are now up to Season 12.

"Joss Whedon is really one of the greatest creators we ever worked with", he said. "When Joss decides it's time, we'll do it", Newman explains.

"Reboots aren't actually a focus for us", Newman continued.

Over 20 years later, "Buffy" still means a lot to its fans, and the good news for those who might be nervous about the possibility of a revival happening is that according to Newman, it would depend entirely on Whedon coming to 20th Century Fox with an idea.

Nigeria's President Negotiating the Release Of 100 Abducted Schoolgirls
Government Science and Technical College in Dapchi, Yobe State, where 110 girls were abducted by Boko Haram last week. He said that was why his administration chose negotiation, rather than military option, to secure their release.

This is interesting insight into the origin of a TV reboot, which, at least at Fox, seems to stem from the creator more than an executive's insight about what might work in today's media climate (although that second factor is surely also taken into account). But when we first brought it back it was Chris and David and Gillian.

When the show ended in 2003, Buffy and her college-aged friends had destroyed their hometown, Sunnydale, and the Hellmouth. There are several Buffy the Vampire Slayer podcasts like "Buffering" or "Buffy Talk".

The network already has several revivals airing now, including another '90s cult hit, The X-Files, which has not been doing well ratings-wise. "But, you know, AFTER", Whedon told E! Buffy broke new ground so that other shows could build on it.

The story of Buffy Summers continues to live on, however. It wouldn't be like, 'I can't believe we're still in high school! If we did it with these guys, they'd be the age they basically are. You can see everything from Jessica Jones to Teen Wolf taking its cues from Buffy. There are some things that a revival could improve on - the show's lack of diversity for one - but Buffy the Vampire Slayer left a lasting legacy that can only be tarnished by a revival.
