Ex-boyfriend arrested in connection with SUNY Binghamton student's death


A man suspected in the murder of a Binghamton University student who jumped on a flight to his native Nicaragua was arrested Tuesday in the Central America country, The New York Post reported.

Anderson, a senior majoring in nursing from Westbury, New York, was found dead at 12:53 p.m. on Friday after police responded to a welfare check at 23 Oak St., a student residence on Binghamton's West Side.

Nicaraguan authorities told WABC-TV that Tercero had been detained and transferred to a prison in El Chipote, 40 miles southwest of the capitol, Managua. She was taken to Lourdes Hospital, where an autopsy found she was a victim of a homicide.

The circumstances of what led to Anderson's death have not been revealed.

Tercero is suspected of killing Anderson, a 22-year-old student at BU, and fled to Nicaragua on an global flight, the Binghamton Police Department said on Monday.

It's unknown at this time if Tercero will be brought back to the U.S.

"The investigation determined that the person of interest has left the United States by worldwide air travel flight, prior to the discovery of Haley Anderson's deceased body", police said in a statement over the weekend.

Diaz did not say whether Tercero was being represented by a lawyer in Nicaragua. Anderson, a nursing student at the State University of NY at Binghamton, was from Westbury, Long Island.
