Marcus Smart tears tendon in thumb, out indefinitely for Celtics

The Celtics may have caught a break with Kyrie Irving's left knee soreness, which is believed to be no more than tendonitis and will not require much time off, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Celtics also lost backup center Daniel Theis to season-ending surgery to fix a torn meniscus.

Marcus Smart is being evaluated for a potentially torn tendon in his right thumb, two people with knowledge of the situation tell Celtics Wire. Yahoo Sports' Shams Charania was the first to report the potential tear.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders declined to comment saying, "We don't comment on personnel issues". McEntee was sacked on Monday over unspecified security concerns, according to a new report .

To be more accurate, the injury occurred when Smart went for a diving steal in what was ultimately a 99-97 Boston lost to Indiana Sunday.

"(It's) sore, but it will be alright", Smart said Sunday night after the game, sporting a black soft brace on his thumb after the injury.

The "can he play through it" question comes down to issues of can he make it worse, how does it impact his shot and ball handling (it is his shooting hand), and can he tolerate the pain? Theis was averaging 5.3 points and 4.4 rebounds in 63 games this season, playing behind Al Horford and Greg Monroe.
