Mob beats adivasi youth to death in Attappady

A 27-year-old tribal man was thrashed by people at a village in Kerala's Palakkad district after he was caught shop-lifting. Madhu's sister Sarasu, who took part in the road rokho, was admitted to Government Tribal Specialty Hospital at Kottathara after she fainted.

Attappady, where Kerala has one of its largest tribal population, has been in the news in the past for poverty, malnutrition and child deaths. He was nabbed by a few locals on the outskirts where they tied him and brought him back to the town.

A group of people handed over Madhu to the Agali police after beating him with sticks.

People from all over the country have slammed those responsible for the attack and are demanding justice for the man. Manila C Mohan, a journalist, said in a Facebook post that those "who don't have power won't understand the powerless, they won't understand that the powerless have the right to live". So far, the police has registered a case of unnatural death, reported NDTV. "Arrests will be made today itself", said MR Ajithkumar, Inspector General of Police (Thrissur Range) who is supervising a special probe team looking into the youth's lynching, told the media at Attapadi on Friday evening. The unidentified man who took the photo can be seen smiling at the camera. The mob found rice and bakery items from him, police said. I wanted to go there but my limbs had gone numb out of shock. She said he had been living in a cave in the nearby forest and came down only when he ran out of food.
