Google Assistant gaining 30 new languages, multilingual support, and more

Building a slide deck, pitch, or presentation? There's also no mention of whether Assistant will understand users mixing multiple languages in a single query or sentence.

More significantly, Google Assistant is going to become multilingual, allowing it to understand commands from multiple languages.

Google also said Friday that starting over the next week, the company is adding two new features to the assistant: routines and location-based reminders. With Routines, you can create personalized commands and responses - for example, saying "OK Google, I'm home", could turn on the lights, adjust the thermostat, and play some music.

This isn't the only way that Google Assistant can multitask, however.

In the coming weeks, you also be able to set reminders on your phone based on locations. For example, if a user needs to pick up milk when they get to the grocery store, they can ask Assistant on Google Home to remind them to do so. And look for the assistant to arrive on more Android phones, too.

Currently, the Assistant is available in eight languages.

Google's hardware partners might be willing to wait for the actual start of MWC 2018 to unveil the first wave of simple and ultra-affordable Android Oreo (Go edition) phones, as well as a few new Android One devices, but the search giant is jumping the gun on some of its own Barcelona announcements.

Prior to the emergence of Google Assistant Routines, the My Day feature for a calendar rundown, traffic report, and latest news was the only multi-action feature available for Google Assistant.

Specifically, Google Assistant is adding support for six routines aimed at tackling tasks in the morning as you're trying to get out the door, during your commute to and from work, and upon your arrival back at home. This feature will work for English, French, and German speaking users, with support for more languages added "over time".
