Detroit police are working to apprehend a barricaded gunman on Detroit's east side who is alleged to have fatally shot two women and wounded a responding police officer.

There was no word on the relationship of the dead women to the suspect.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m., according to reports from WDIV-TV (Channel 4) and WXYZ-TV (Channel 7).

The officer is hospitalized and his condition is not known. A bullet struck an officer in the leg but the cop is expected to be OK.

The shooting comes just over a week after the Detroit Police Department said their goodbyes to Officer Glenn Doss Jr. a cop who shot by a barricaded gunman while responding to a domestic violence call on January 24. He also has seven guns registered under his name. Police say the shooting suspect has mental issues.

Zhu has been detained and told police that he carried out the attack to "vent personal grievances", according to a statement. Joy City, a 13-storey complex, is the biggest mall in the Xidan area, with global brand names and a large digital cinema.

The gunman retreated to the home when police arrived and was still there mid-morning Monday, occasionally firing shots.

Police surround the home where they believe the suspect is.

"This is one thing we always deal with this situation - these situations always revolve around someone with a mental illness that's either untreated or something that they're responsible for self-treating which they do not treat".

Williams offered few details about the man barricaded inside the home other than, citing people who know the armed man, he is "suffering from a mental illness".
