Dalit Law Student Dies After Scuffle Outside Restaurant


The men hit Dileep's head and legs with bricks, metal rods and hockey sticks.

Dilip Saroj was beaten to death with a hockey stick, an iron rod and bricks in a fight that started when main accused Vijay Shankar Singh accidentally brushed against him while entering a restaurant. The attack was captured on a mobile by a passerby.

Twenty-six-year-old Dileep, a second-year LLB student, had reportedly gone to a restaurant for a meal in Karnalganj along with two friends on Friday.

The police released CCTV footage from the restaurant to back up their claim.

Afterwards, some youths are seen lifting an unconscious Dileep on to a motorbike and rushing him to the hospital.

They had also identified one of the attackers as Vijay Shankar Singh, a travelling ticket examiner with the Railways. He is believed to be in Varanasi. The man who recorded the attack and another witness are heard saying in the video, "The police will turn up only after he is dead". Call it police negligence or no fear of the law, the inhumane acts committed by people scar us even more with the sheer brutality of it. The restaurant manager had reportedly dialled the police helpline but did not get a response.

The police, inexplicably, are yet to contact the person who shot the video.

Meanwhile, Allahabad SSP Akash Kulhary has suspended three policemen on charges of dereliction of duties.Kulhary said several police teams have been formed to nab the accused. "I was hit with chairs too, but I managed to escape", said Prakash Singh, one of Dilip's friends and an eyewitness in the case.

Saroj and his friends had gone out for dinner at the restaurant, the police said.
