Latest United team news from Mourinho

Dropping Pogba for United's routine win against Huddersfield Town on the following Saturday, it will be intriguing to see how Mourinho chooses to use United's outstanding midfielder as they enter a very busy few weeks.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is bemused by the debate over how best to harness Paul Pogba given the midfielder's "complete" game and nearly unparalleled potential.

"So, people ask what is the best position for Paul to play - Paul is a midfield player".

Never likely to subscribe to Sam Allardyce's "it's not for me to say" what Wayne Rooney should and shouldn't do, Mourinho has previously spoken out against Paul Scholes when he dared to question whether Pogba was utilised as best as he possibly could.

"Paul has a very professional behaviour and this week was no different to what Paul is like every week".

He added: "But I don't want attacking players, so don't speak about attacking players that are coming here, because nobody is coming here". But I'm confused because when people say box-to-box they mean they have to play free of defensive duties, that is not box-to-box. Eric Bailly and Daley Blind are the two players that are out.

"It doesn't matter the tactical system the team plays, he will always be a midfield player".

"And as a midfield player it's hard to find one with more potential than Paul has, because Paul has everything".

It is understood United have already activated a clause in Shaw's contract to keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2019 but Mourinho sees him remaining with the club for much longer.

"Could he work in my direction?"

"Between me and Paul there are no confusions - he is a midfield player and that's it".

"Not just on the pitch but also during the training week and he made a big effort".

But Mourinho hit out at critics of Pogba's performances when he spoke to the media on Friday ahead of a Premier League trip to Newcastle United.

"I don't know why, I think it's the only stadium in the Premier League where I have not won ― also Huddersfield but I only played there once", he said.

'I like to go there, I like the feeling of going to Mr Robson's home.
