Since Tesla wants to build a system that's more generally useful, it made sense for the company to not push ahead with this previous year and try to do it probably. The company claims foot traffic for the Model 3 is boosting sales of its premium cars, as well as solar panels and battery packs, rather than cannibalizing demand for its high-end products as feared.
Tesla has reported a loss of $675.4m in three months to 31 December, compared to $121.3m a year earlier.
"Even this Tesla realist and Model 3 deposit holder has doubts about Tesla ramping up to 10,000 units/week, essentially promising production levels of over 250,000 units in 2018", said Rebecca Lindland, executive analyst at Kelley Blue Book's KBB.com.
There is also a production constraint at Tesla's automated material conveyance system in the company's factory in Fremont, California, but CEO said improving that system "appears to be on track". If they purchased the more expensive version with an upgraded battery, they are told they will have the vehicle by late 2018 while those that purchased the standard Model 3 will have to wait until 2019. "It's just a matter of time", Musk said on a conference call with analysts.
"If we can send a Roadster to the asteroid belt, we can probably solve Model 3 production". The automaker insisted in its Q4 2017 report that this new year would be transformative, targeting first 2,500 Model 3 cars rolling off the production line by the end of March, and then doubling that rate by the end of Q2.
