Winter storm warning extended until 9 pm

There is some good news on the horizon: Much milder weather is forecast for the eastern half of the the weekend, the Climate Prediction Center said. At least twelve people died, including a baby in a auto that plunged off a slippery overpass into a Louisiana canal. The baby's mother was in critical condition.

Two others died along an icy stretch of I-75 southeast of Atlanta. One homeless person died from hypothermia, fire Chief Samuel Peña said.

A young college student died on icy I-64, hitting a tractor-trailer in West Virginia.

Alek Kroutmann, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Slidell, Louisiana, said the Baton Rouge forecast calling for a low of 19 degrees (-7 Celsius) Wednesday would fall just shy of the record for that date in Louisiana's capital city: 18 degrees (-8 Celsius) on January 17, 1977.

In Dallas, Texas, two people were found dead after spending the night in the cold. Officials said there is the possibility of minor snow, sleet and freezing rain.
