What is MicroLED? The TV technology to take on OLED explained

Thus, major PC manufacturers are expected to demonstrate devices compatible with this standard in CES this year.

Samsung unveiled "The Wall" during CES 2018, promising the world's first consumer modular MicroLED television.

Any company that uses the technology can decide how to best hide the display when its off.

You can ask the voice assistant to search for movies, play your favorite show, do a Google Search or read you the weather from your TV.

The proprietary LG OLED technology is designed to deliver perfect blacks thanks to its ability to turn each pixel on or completely off

Flexible televisions are just one unusual screen technology on display at the Consumer Electronics Show, as several big TV makers use the Las Vegas event to gamble on what the future of home entertainment will look like. The Wall is possibly the first large television from this or any brand to, supposedly, come equipped with a technology called modular Micro LED, in which LEDs on the display can be lit up individually with colors appearing more vibrant than ever before and with ideal infinite contrast due to a complete lack of backlight technology. Yet the company keeps investing in microLED TV R&D in parallel, which has the potential for much brighter displays with a higher luminous efficiency, while still offering the pure blacks from OLEDs as it is too a self-emitting technology. MicroLED, on the other hand, is a modular technology - meaning panels are made up of a series of smaller ones, "knitted together" to make one larger whole.

HS Kim, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics America, announced that previous technologies created to link its devices into useful networks, Samsung Connect, Smart Home and Smart View would be deprecated and replaced with a new SmartThings app, available in the third quarter of 2018. Samsung says it will be commercially available this year. Hisense was really pushing these, and especially its Laser TV line that uses laser lights and TI's DLP technology. That's primarily because Samsung has designed this huge TV to be completely modular. Other vendors touting 4K projectors included Sony, LG, and Chinese vendor Changhong. The first incredible model has a screen that literally rolls up into the TV's base when switched off. It was an operating system for budget TVs which served up all the usual TV stuff - a program guide, picture and sound settings - and a way to quickly get to Amazon's Prime Video content.

Samsung's new security solution for its TVs has already earned the approval of the industry. It's probably still a niche technology, but it is interesting.
