Yemen's Houthis threaten to block Red Sea shipping lane

Iran-backed Huthi rebels, who are locked in a war with Yemen's Saudi-backed government, said they shot down the plane over Saada, their northern Yemeni stronghold, according to their Al-Masirah television channel.

More than 10,000 people have been killed in the Yemen conflict, millions have been displaced and are at risk of acute hunger and malnutrition and one million have been infected with cholera.

The Houthi militants in Yemen have lost legitimacy after the killing of former president Ali Abdallah Saleh, said Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Anwar Gargash, in tweets on Thursday.

It provided no further details and there was no immediate comment from the Saudi-led coalition, fighting the rebels since 2015, on whether the missile caused material damage or casualties.

"The Houthi who decimated crops and seeds, destroyed Yemen, betrayed his ally and partner, is now threatening the worldwide navigation; we are facing a terrorist gang that the end of its existence in Yemen is nigh", Gargash said.
