Steve Bannon quits Breitbart after explosive Trump book

The statement declined to offer a reason for Bannon's departure. The President is one of the hardest workers I've ever seen and puts in long hours and long days almost every day of the week all year long'.

In Mr Trump's view, Mr Bannon's great sin with regard to Wolff's book was to say highly negative things about the President's family.

In the book, Bannon also said that President Trump had "lost his stuff".

But, depending on what actually transpired in that meeting, Mr Bannon might not have been so far off. Mr Trump himself participated in a meeting aboard Air Force One, as he returned from his second presidential trip overseas, to draft a statement to cover up what had happened in that meeting. To recap: Bannon said a bunch of disparaging stuff about Trump and company to author Michael Wolff, including an explosive claim that Trump Jr's meeting with Russian officials was "treasonous".

His critical comments about Trump's adult children, published in Michael Wolff's "Fire and Fury" last week, enraged the president, who declared that Bannon had "lost his mind".

On Monday, Wolff told MSNBC that in Bannon's comments to him, "Don Jr.'s name come up again and again" and that Bannon's remarks regarding treason and lack of patriotism were "not directed at Manafort, they were directed directly at Don Jr".

Miller also criticized Bannon, who is quoted extensively in the book, saying it was "tragic and unfortunate" that Bannon "would make these grotesque comments so out of touch with reality and obviously so vindictive".

Breitbart has two daily shows on SiriusXM's Patriot Channel that Bannon would often host with other staffers, as well as shows that broadcast on the weekend.

Bannon has not yet announced what he plans to do next, but has promised to do so "soon". Sirius said in a statement its programming agreement was with Breitbart, not with Bannon.

In exchange for their investment, the Mercers secured a seat for Bannon on Breitbart's board.

Bannon left the White House just four months later, but by then Ailes had died. Days after he departed the White House in August, Bannon told THE WEEKLY STANDARD that "the Trump presidency that we fought for and won is over". Breitbart's editors insisted the site endorsed none of those views. Among the writers he championed was Milo Yiannopoulos, who elicited both a rapturous response from Breitbart's readers but heavy criticism elsewhere for columns about lesbians, blacks, and Muslims.
