Program gives $2B in grants for assistance to homeless

Nationwide, the department has awarded a record $2 billion to more than 7,300 housing and services programs.

The grants provide crucial housing and support services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness statewide.

Los Angeles County - which has the nation's second-highest number of homeless people of any region at more than 55,000 - will receive about $122 million.

New federal funding is heading to New Jersey to help support efforts to put an end to homelessness in the state. The cities of Aurora and Elgin, as well as Kane County, received more than $1.7 million.

Homelessness also inched up about 1 percent across the nation, according to HUD, which found that on a given night across the country in 2017, an estimated 553,742 people were homeless, with nearly two-thirds housed in shelters or transitional housing programs and one-third living on the streets. In addition to coordinating funding for area homeless programs, they will count all local homeless people in a single night at a later point in the year.
