OR physicians urge flu patients to call first due to overcrowding

This year the flu is especially hard-hitting, with the number of reported influenza-related deaths last week doubling to a season-to-date total of 91.

Nebraska health officials on Friday had counted 12 flu-related deaths this season, up from eight the week before.

So many older people die of the flu each year that monitoring deaths under 65 reveals more about the severity of the flu season, they say.

So far, influenza B strains have not yet appeared, and Jernigan said it was not too late for people who have not been immunized to benefit from a flu shot. To locate a county health department clinic in your area or for more information on the flu, visit the MSDH website.

"Every week shows a little more of an increase of influenza across the state", Dr. William Berg, director of the Peninsula Health District, said.

It says 28 of those patients became ill even though they had been vaccinated.

Symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, body aches, headaches and fatigue. Use a tissue or cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow or arm.
