This year the flu is especially hard-hitting, with the number of reported influenza-related deaths last week doubling to a season-to-date total of 91.

Nebraska health officials on Friday had counted 12 flu-related deaths this season, up from eight the week before.

So many older people die of the flu each year that monitoring deaths under 65 reveals more about the severity of the flu season, they say.

The state agency reported that over the past week, cases of influenza rose by 37%, and new cases of influenza were reported in 61 of 62 counties. It says 28 of those patients became ill even though they had been vaccinated.

While the flu vaccine is the recommended precautionary measure, Echols said county residents should wash their hands often, refrain from touching your eyes, mouth or nose and stay at home if they experience flu-like symptoms.
