North Korea accepts South Korea's offer, will meet for peace talks

They come just one month before the February 9 opening ceremony for the Winter Games.

The two Koreas agreed last week to hold their first official dialogue in more than two years and are expected to discuss the North's participation in the Winter Olympics in South Korea next month. But South Korea and the U.S. has maintained that the exercises were defensive in nature.

"I'd like to see them getting involved in the Olympics and maybe things go from there".

The person-to-person talks will be held January 9 - one day after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's birthday - at the Peace House, located on the South Korean side of the truce village of Panmunjom, located in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two nations, Baik said.

"Absolutely, I would do that", Mr Trump said. "At the appropriate time, we'll get involved".

North Korea and South Korea remain technically at war more than six decades after open hostilities ceased, with more than 30,000 American troops and the U.S. nuclear umbrella pledged to Seoul's defense.

Moon campaigned on greater engagement with North Korea and has since his May election affirmed his commitment to reunification through dialogue.

The Central Intelligence Agency head also rejected a New York Times article on Sunday that reported US intelligence agencies had been unable to foresee the North's rapid nuclear strides over the past several months.

Pompeo said he still believed, as he had said in October, that North Korea is just a few months away from crossing the threshold to putting a USA city at risk of nuclear attack.

Still, both the US and South Korea want no disruptions during the Olympics in Pyeongchang, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from the heavily fortified border between the two Koreas. Chang told reporters Saturday at Beijing Capital International Airport that a pair of North Korean figure skaters were likely to compete, Japan's Kyodo News reported.

But the new year has witnessed a marked softening of tone.

"North Korea would love to see a growing gap between US and South Korea, but its really a byproduct of North Korean goals rather than its objective", Go added.

"North Korea sees a moment of opportunity given South Korea's clear interest into wanting to have a positive and peaceful Olympics, and will leverage that moment for tactical gains to ease pressure of sanctions". He has indicated he is open to many different options, including military strikes on North Korea's launch capabilities. "I evaluate this change highly", Abe said, adding that the regime must "abandon its nuclear weapons and missiles" program. Trying to divine Kim's thinking from North Korean propaganda broadcasts is about as unrewarding as deconstructing Trump's tweets. "Talks for the sake of talks are meaningless".
