New pictures show how auto park fire destroyed up to 1600 vehicles


A KESWICK woman who attended the Liverpool International Horse Show at the city's Echo Arena on New Year's Eve said she feared there had been a terrorist attack, as news broke of a fire in the neighbouring multi-storey auto park.

The final performance of the Liverpool International Horse Show, which was due to take place in the evening in the arena following a successful three day event, was cancelled.

"It was all insignificant as long as everyone was OK and we could get the horses out".

The fire reached temperatures of 1000 degrees C, and required 12 fire engines from neighbouring departments to bring it under control.

It is thought that an accidental fire within a vehicle at the multi-storey auto park on King's Dock caused other vehicles to ignite. All horses were successfully evacuated from the carpark and then removed from the stables after smoke spread to them.

During the afternoon, a joint decision was taken to cancel the last show of the Liverpool International Horse Show, due at 7:30 p.m. "We would also like to thank the people who kindly provided transport for customers to enable them to travel home, as well as Liverpool City Council for establishing a relief centre for those needing shelter".

The blaze broke out shortly before 16:40 GMT on New Year's Eve.

Writing to the government, Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson urged Minister Nick Hurd, with responsibility for fire services, to re-evaluate current building regulations in an attempt to ensure something like this does not happen again, including the provision of sprinklers.

They include Celebrating Sgt Pepper on 13 January to mark the 10th anniversary of the opening of the arena.
