AT&T drops plan to sell Huawei smartphone in US


Huawei's press conference was held and the company still announced Mate 10 Pro availability in the U.S. but without the help of AT&T or any other carriers for that matter.

While Huawei has been selling unlocked units of their flagships through online stores in the USA, they are yet to carry out sales through major carriers like AT&T - which remains to be a popular choice among Americans when purchasing new handsets.

The snub would be the latest example of a Chinese firm struggling to do business in the US.

It looks that more and more Android phones could become available to purchase at the US Microsoft Store this year.

It was widely reported to have been in talks to release its flagship Mate 10 Pro device with AT&T.

Washington began to have concerns about Chinese investment in the United States before President Donald Trump took office previous year, and those concerns have heightened. The major US carrier generally classified the reasons as "political pressure".

Neither of the companies have commented on reasons why AT&T backed out but reports say that it was due to data security concerns that have loomed over Chinese manufacturers.

In 2012, a United States congressional committee said Chinese Huawei and ZTE would be banned from mergers and acquisitions in the USA because the two companies pose a threat to U.S. security.

"Chinese commercial technology is a vehicle for the Chinese government to spy on United States federal agencies, posing a severe national security threat", Conaway said in a statement. It was launched in Europe in October with a price tag of 799 euros ($955).

The China-based telecom operator Huawei failed to make a deal to sell its new smartphones through the United States operator.

Gal Gadot, the Israeli actress who played the title role in the 2017 Warner Bros. movie "Wonder Woman", is the new celebrity sponsor of Chinese telecommunications company Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. Ms. Gadot will join Huawei's marketing efforts as the company introduces its Mate10 Pro mobile phone to USA market.
