The theme was echoed by Laura Dern, victor of a best supporting actress for Big Little Lies, who said: "Many of us were taught not to tattle".

"What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have", she said. "At least they managed to elect a female president", she said.

The movie, in which downtown Sylva stands in for the fictional Ebbing, won the Globe for Best Motion Picture (Drama) as well as Best Screenplay, for writer-director Martin McDonagh; Best Actress (Drama), for Frances McDormand; and Best Supporting Actor, for Sam Rockwell.

On the big-screen side, writer-director Martin McDonagh's dark drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri was the biggest victor, receiving six nominations and four awards over the course of the night. However, Guillermo del Toro did win his first Globe for directing The Shape of Water.

HBO's "Big Little Lies" took home four awards, including Best TV, movie, or limited series.

She also thanked Amazon: "Their support was completely unwavering at all times", she said. Just a couple months after premiering to critical praise, The Marvelous Mrs.

As with the final scenes of "Lady Bird", it takes the courage of one's convictions for a filmmaker to leave the conclusion to their film so deliberately ambiguous, but in McDonagh's case, it's in keeping with his approach to the question I asked at the start of this review, which he steadfastly refuses to answer, preferring instead to let the audience, and his characters, make up their own minds. "Monsters are our way of making sense of imperfection". "And in many of these instances - three precise instances - these little stories have saved my life". "All you ladies in this category, bar, tequila's on me".

The police officer played by Rockwell (who won a Golden Globe for the performance) is said in the movie to have tortured a black man.

But to many watching the show at home - and perhaps some of those in the ballroom at the Beverly Hilton Sunday night - Three Billboards' domination felt out of step with the moment.

In addition to the competitive awards, the 2018 Golden Globes honored Oprah Winfrey, star of upcoming "A Wrinkle in Time", with the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award for her "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment".

This year's awards are being unveiled against the backdrop of a massive sexual harassment and abuse scandal. In conjunction with the Time's Up movement, men and women attending the event graced the red carpet in black in protest and in solidarity.
