The price of human rights


Certain governments have tried to redefine human rights in their favor, but in the end the ideals that underpin the declaration prevail: all human beings deserve dignity, justice and equality.

Roque faced the ICC shortly before the kickoff today of yearlong preparations to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

In the Cooperation Agreement signed between Bangladesh and the European Union in 2001, both sides reaffirmed the importance they attach to the principles of human rights in the UN Conventions.

It spells out the right to decent work for equal pay, to an adequate standard of living, health and well-being, including food, clothing, housing, medical care, education. "We have rights to privacy and justice", said the UN Secretary General. It diminishes our shared humanity when people are denied these basic and universal rights. "They are the foundation of peaceful societies and sustainable development".

Although many Americans have forgotten or are unaware of the 69th anniversary today of the signing of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it has special meaning to me; my father, Guy Pérez-Cisneros y Bonnel, and Ernesto Díhigo were the delegates from the Republic of Cuba, which for a small country, played an importunate role in launching and crafting the declaration. The Universal Declaration of the Human rights is the translated document in the world which is available in more than 500 languages.

It has helped to prevent violations, obtain justice for wrongs, and strengthen national and global human rights laws and safeguards. Our Government remains committed to working in closer collaboration with our provincial, territorial, and Indigenous partners in implementing our global human rights obligations and commitments, including the shift towards basing relations with Indigenous peoples on the recognition of Indigenous rights.
