Vietnam Veterans pay respects on the 76th anniversary of Pearl Harbor

The ceremony by the 9/11 Memorial Committee of Lackawanna County marked the 76th anniversary of the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941, that surprised the American Pacific fleet moored at Pearl Harbor and plunged the United States into World War II.

Four battleships and two destroyers sank that day, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Charles Jindrich said of the attack that killed 2,388 Americans.

Parry was a 21-year-old Army motor mechanic stationed on Oahu in 1941 when Japanese forces launched a surprise aerial attack on the military base there.

More than 2,400 lives were lost when the Japanese attacked.

Vietnam Veteran Terry Baker said when they all came home from war people would spit at them, so now they make sure that no solider falls into the woodwork.

Wetzel, 70, is a former U.S. Army soldier who served in the 173rd Assault Helicopter Company and 11th Combat Aviation Battalion from 1965 to 1968.

Just before 8 a.m. on that Sunday morning, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on the base, where they managed to destroy or damage almost 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and over 300 airplanes.
