Israel strikes Gaza Strip amid tensions over Jerusalem


According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza, some 2,147 Palestinians were killed during the 51-day Israeli offensive on Gaza in 2014, including 72 who later succumbed to their wounds.

Two rockets were fired from Gaza toward southern Israel. Security sources said no rockets fell in Israeli territory.

In response to rocket fire earlier on Thursday evening, the IDF fired on Hamas targets in central Gaza.

Demonstrators in cities including Jerusalem, Bethlehem and Ramallah rallied against Trump's shift in policy, some burning American flags and photos of the USA president.

Israeli troops responded to the protests initially with less-lethal riot dispersal measures and then with live rounds, injuring several of the "main agitators", the army said.

Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh addressed Palestinians and the Arab world in a televised speech on Thursday morning, saying that "Jerusalem is our honor".

Jerusalem's status is among the most hard issues in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the U.S. traditional position has been that it must be negotiated between the two sides.

This latest report from the region comes after U.S. President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Today, we acknowledge that Jerusalem is the Israeli capital.

Israel, which claims all of Jerusalem as its undivided capital, has welcomed Trump's decision.
