This Aadhaar linking deadline is not changing


The Centre has informed the Supreme Court that the deadline for citizens to link their Aadhaar number with various services will be extended by the three months to March 31.

The Attorney General, however, made it clear that February 6 next year would remain the deadline for linking Aadhaar for availing of uninterrupted mobile services as it had been mandated by the apex court.

Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for those who are opposed to Aadhaar scheme told the bench, also comprising justices A. M. Khanwilkar and D. Y. Chandrachud, that the central government should give an undertaking that no coercive steps would be taken against those fail to link their Aadhaar with various services.

"That Aadhaar Act being in force, all notifications for requiring Aadhaar for various welfare programmes, verifying bank account, PAN card and SIM card with Aadhaar stand valid and lawful", it said in a statement.

"UIDAI has clarified on a video circulated purportedly out of context of a lady lawyer on WhatsApp, Twitter and Social Media and said that the video refers to an order passed by the Supreme Court on August 11, 2015 when the court had restricted use of Aadhaar to only few programs", the statement said. Aadhaar centres have been opened in banks, which makes it easy for the customers.

Aadhaar has to be added to bank accounts, PAN cards, government services and cellphone services.

Earlier this year, the government made it mandatory to link Aadhaar card to SIM card.

There are also a number of other benefits of linking your mobile phone number with your Aadhaar.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Deepak Misra had in October said that a constitution bench would be constituted and Aadhaar-related matters would come up for hearing before it.
