Ryan Reynolds cast as Pikachu in Detective Pikachu movie

Clearly gunning for Academy Award acknowledgment, the 41-year-old actor will play the thunder mouse in Detective Pikachu, a spin-off from the popular Pokemon gaming franchise. But as of Wednesday afternoon, the lead Detective Pikachu role appears to have been cast and while it's not DeVito, the choice is just as good.

Ryan Reynolds is joining Detective Pikachu and will voice the famous Pokémon. Obviously, Pokémon do not typically speak (Team Rocket's Meowth notwithstanding), so Reynolds' performance will likely determine whether the film makes or breaks it at the office.

Rob Letterman (Goosebumps, Monsters vs. Aliens) is directing the Pokemon film from a script written by Nicole Perlman (Guardians of The Galaxy) and Alex Hirsch (Gravity Falls). Pikachu is a type of Pokémon, and the Detective character is one with the power to find things.

Ryan Reynolds is trading "Deadpool" red for Pikachu yellow.

Eminem 'Revival' Features Ed Sheeran, Beyonce, Pink
" Revival " will complete a trilogy of albums from Eminem , joining 2009's "Relapse" and 2010's "Recovery". Since " Revival " is out already next week, there's evidently no time to release a new single.

Reynolds will join previously announced cast members Kathryn Newton (Big Little Lies) and Justice Smith (Get Down), who is also in the upcoming Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

The role is said to be motion capture in nature, sources say. Newton is reportedly playing a journalist aiding them along the way.

Detective Pikachu, a 3DS eShop game that has, so far, only released in Japan, is getting a Hollywood film - we've known that for a while.
