Google launches AndroidGo for 512 MB phones, Assistant for Jiophone

Google hosted its "Google for India" event at New Delhi today. The company also showcased several upcoming features in the existing products, which will help the consumers in the country.

Google has been fairly active in rolling out India-centric features for Maps.

The Go Edition of Android will be 15% faster than the regular edition and leaves a much smaller footprint on the storage memory than the regular version, it said. The first version of the Android Go will be called Android Oreo (Go Edition) and it will be available later today as a part of the Android 8.1 release. In the meantime, close to 5 million users have joined the service, taking the overall user base to 12 million. You can more about it in my original report. Note that the JioPhone already comes with its own in-house assistant - called HelloJio - that can be used for voice search and fire up relevant apps, including calling and texting people. It's a new effort by Google to launch budget-friendly Android smartphones for developing markets. Google Assistant will also be able to use the 4G connectivity of the JioPhone to quickly and reliable access and deliver information using Google's vast information resources. Along with this, the search giant also launch Go version of Google apps which are optimized to run on low-end and entry-level smartphones.

Sengupta said a special version of the Google Assistant - in both English and Hindi - has been developed for Reliance Jio phones.

The Nokia 6 was also unveiled in China, so it would make sense that these new flagships would also start their launch in Asia. The Nokia 8 , on the other hand, will come with the same specs as the Nokia 9 but the screen will be an 18:9 ratio screen.

Additionally, Google also revealed that the Assistant is coming to JioPhone.

Martha Welsh, Google Maps' strategic partner development manager, said, of the decision to start in India: "It's important that we get this right". This is in fact a first for any feature phone, but then, those who know a thing or two about it would know, the JioPhone is a little different from any other feature phone in the market right now. The company demoed the feature on the stage at the event and it seems pretty simple.

"Over the next few weeks, Tez will offer a customised experience to pay bills from within the app".

At its launch, the bill payment facility will support over 70 billers, including national and state electricity providers, gas and water, and DTH recharge, Google said.
