It's not just the car-based technology that's under scrutiny, though - the JLR team is also working with connected street furniture, such as traffic lights that talk to the auto and cars that communicate information to each other.
Further trials are scheduled to take place in Coventry and Milton Keynes early next year followed by a final series of open road demonstration events in both cities during the second half of 2018.
The self-driving cars being tested by JLR and TMETC will have trained test operators supervising the cars at all times.

Testing is now taking place on the roads of Coventry, near the Jaguar Land Rover headquarters. "By using inputs from multiple sensors, and finding intelligent ways to process this data, we are gaining accurate technical insight to pioneer the automotive application of these technologies", said Nick Rogers, JLR's head of product engineering, in a release.
Rogers added: "Jaguar Land Rover is proud to be a leader in collaborative research projects for autonomous and connected cars". There are three such alliances in the United Kingdom that are working to develop automated and connected vehicles that can be used on public roads.
Forming part of the £20m UK Autodrive project, JLR is testing a range of new technologies including cars that can talk to each other to improve safety. On one side, tech giants and auto makers are racing against each other to develop self-driving vehicle tech; on the other, auto makers like Tesla have helped accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.
It has already proven its research technology can work on a closed track and the real-world testing is the next step in turning the research into reality. Tests have passed in a regular mode, on-road incidents during the test are not reported.
