Salvation Army to offer assistance to Detroit families

Thousands of Salvation Army bell-ringers fan out across the country to ring bells and solicit donations to the iconic Red Kettles from holiday shoppers.

The Lima Salvation Army is in need of volunteers to help make their goal in this years annual Red Kettle Campaign.

The Salvation Army itself goes back to William Booth, who in 1865 took his ministry into the streets of London to reach the poor, homeless, hungry and destitute.

The goal for the 2017 Christmas Kettle campaign is $310,000.

"Many families are still finding it almost impossible to stay afloat financially, and we've seen it firsthand in the increasing number of New Jersey residents who come to us for help", says Major Ivan K. Rock, State Commander of The Salvation Army in New Jersey.

The campaign is The Salvation Army's largest fundraiser of the year and runs through December 23.

"It's about five shifts per day per location", Sadowy said. "Once again we ask for the community's help to make Christmas bright for families in need so no child or senior is forgotten". "We are always looking".

"When I'm at the kettle and people say "I'm so sorry I've only got a little bit of change", I always say 'If everybody felt that way and only gave a little bit of change, it would be incredible at how much money we could raise, ' " Roche said. "It helps with our emergency food services... past year we provided more than 20 thousand bags of groceries to individuals and families", said Maria Sadowy from the Kingston branch.
