Fellaini's decision has shocked the club at a time when the player has never been as highly thought of by the fans or Jose Mourinho.

Soler has meanwhile greatly impressed United staff in the 11 months since making his debut for Valencia in December. Fellaini signed for Everton in a deal worth £15 million, and he quickly established himself as a first-team regular.

So it comes as a potential boost for Newcastle that Manchester United have reportedly identified a replacement for Shaw.

Fellaini has garnered a reputation as a tough-tackling, no-nonsense midfielder who can break down opposition attacks. In his 237 appearances in the Premier League, Fellaini has picked up 54 yellow cards and 3 red cards, committing 568 fouls along the way.

There is already big interest in him from Besiktas in Turkey.

Despite the stand-off, United boss Jose Mourinho will not sanction the sale of Fellaini in the January transfer window and hopes a compromise can be struck between now and the New Year.

The Frenchman has started only sporadically this season, but has made telling contributions off the bench to net six times, and lay on six more assists, across all competitions.

United are keen for the Belgium global to stay but negotiations, which began last season, have dragged on after he rejected an offer in September.

If he doesn't then United face the prospect of seeing a midfielder in his prime walking away for nothing in June.
