Gunfights break out in Indian-controlled Kashmir

The gunfights come just hours after two local militants were killed when they attacked a police checkpoint in north Kashmir's Handwara on Monday night.

The troops killed the youth during a violent crackdown operation at Kund in Qazigund area of the district.

A soldier lost his life in the encounter between security forces and terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam region.

According to CNN-New18, a similar encounter is in progress in Tral too, where two-three militants have reportedly been cordoned off and fire is being exchanged between the militants and the security forces.

"The police, army and CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) are on the job", said a police spokesperson.

A counter-insurgency operation was launched at Nowbug Kund village in the morning following a specific input about the presence of militants in the area.

Later, an intense gunfight broke out after militants hiding in the area started firing at the armed forces.

"The operation turned into an encounter".

"The militants fired upon a joint party of police, army and paramilitary troopers who were deployed at a crossing to check the movement of vehicles".
