Delhi air pollution: United suspends flights to capital, cites 'severe weather'


"United temporarily suspended Newark-Delhi flights due to poor air quality concerns in Delhi and now has waiver policies in place for customers who are travelling to, from or through Delhi", an airline spokesperson said in a statement.

The airline website said that a flight from Newark to Delhi (UA 082) was cancelled due to "severe weather condition in our route network".In an email on November 9, the airline company informed its passengers that travel disruptions were likely due to "air quality concerns" in Delhi.

Money quoted a representative of the airline, who said that they are monitoring advisories as the region is under a public health emergency.

United has operated on the Newark-New Delhi route since 2005 and now offers daily nonstop service on its Boeing 777-200ER aircraft. Outside the luxury segment and hardcore adventurer sector that frequently combines travels in India with other places in the subcontinent.

Customers who have booked tickets between November 9 and November 13 will be allowed to book tickets for flights leaving on or before November 18 at no additional cost, the airline said.

Officials have likened the city's poor air quality to smoking multiple packs of cigarettes a day, as the season's cold air catches pollutants at the ground level and stops them from dispersing into the air.
