Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay's upcoming film Mersal is one week away for its grand theatrical release. It was speculated that the film may face trouble because of the battle between the Tamil Film Producers' Council and government.
Hema Rukmani, the CEO of Mersal's production house, Sri Thenandal Films, recently tweeted saying that the Vijay starrer is touted to release in 3292 screens globally. In Kerala, it releases in 350 screens, breaking the previous record of 320 screens by Prabhas' Baahubali 2. Mersal also marks the second collaboration of Thalapathy Vijay and director Atlee after their 2016 blockbuster Theri.
Vijay will be seen in a dual role playing both as doctor and magician sons of the village head Thalapathy (another Vijay), who gets killed by the villain SJ Suryah.
Stocks add another week of gains, as earnings kick off
The Nasdaq Composite index rose 0.2% to 6,606 on Friday, and 0.2% on the week for a third weekly gain in a row. USA stocks closed lower on Thursday as Wall Street digested earnings from some of the top financial companies.
Tipped to be made on a whopping budget of Rs 130 crore, Mersal is the most expensive film in Vijay's career, superseding his action-adventure flick Puli, made on a budget of Rs 100 crore. Malaysia, which is a huge market for Tamil cinema, is reportedly going to have a massive 800 screens release.
Catch had previously reported that Mersal teaser unseats the teaser of Hollywood blockbuster film Star Wars: The Last Jedi to become world's most liked teaser. The posters and trailers of the film received positive response from the audience. What needs to be seen is whether Mersal, given its very high budget, can make it big at the box-office or not.
The music of Mersal has been composed by AR Rahman.
