Steve Wozniak launches online university aimed at making tech ed more affordable

If Steve Wozniak truly has an institutional method for helping more people learn new tech skills without going into massive debt, it could be even more important than that other little thing he did: inventing personal computers.

Neither the announcement nor the website mention anything about accreditation, but the website says Woz U is considered part of the Southern Careers Institute and has established partnerships with universities, businesses, government agencies and non-profit organizations.

Headquartered in Arizona, Woz U courses will take place online and will largely be video-based with "live access to instructors and student mentors", the program's website reads. Apparently a representative from Woz U will be calling me soon to speak more about my options. "People often are afraid to choose a technology-based career because they think they can't do it". "I know they can, and I want to show them how".

Launched online, the goal is to eventually have physical locations in 30 cities worldwide.

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak believes it's now too expensive to earn a degree in tech, and so he recently announced the opening of Woz U, an online university that aims to make tech education more affordable. The institute also plans to provide computer science related curriculum to various school districts.

Woz U offers online curriculum to educate computer support specialists and software developers. Prices for the courses are not disclosed on the website. It's unclear whether courses will be offered for free, or whether Woz U plans on charging for any element of the online education platform.

"Each platform will offer students personalized learning to meet their needs", the spokesperson said in an email.

Wozniak on Friday launched Woz U, a digital institute created to fill jobs in the technology industry by training and producing highly skilled, innovative workers through fast and affordable programs.

It will also reach students via mobile, and has rolled out an app to help match learners with careers.
