As more information is received about the status of negotiations, Niagara College will be updating its Strike Information page.

About 12,000 unionized faculty at 24 public colleges in Ontario are poised to strike on Monday to back contract demands.

Officials with the colleges' bargaining team said they are disappointed by the proposals tabled by the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU), as they would ultimately cost an additional $400-million annually.

The union that represents Confederation College's full-time faculty is preparing for a possible strike next week.

"The union is only tinkering with its proposals and not making the substantive changes needed to get a deal", Sonia Del Missier, chair of the colleges' bargaining team, said in a statement.

Niagara College will remain open but classes will be cancelled if a Ontario-wide college faculty strike goes ahead. It said the colleges' claim that its final offer would see improved conversion of contract faculty to full-time positions is false.

Among the key bargaining issues for the union are the growing number of non-full-time contract faculty and academic freedom.

OPSEU represents more than 12,000 professors, instructors, counsellors, and librarians.

The academic employees' collective agreement expired September 30 and while bargaining is ongoing and an agreement could be reached by Sunday, Oct. 15, the college has initiated a contingency plan for staff and students.

Confederation College will ensure that all students have the opportunity to complete their year.
