Forensic testing is being conducted on "biological matter" found near clothing and a walking stick after a dementia sufferer went missing from a far north Queensland nursing home.
"Because of the proximity of these items and this unknown material located near this creek bank, we can not rule out the possibility of a croc attack", Acting Inspector Ed Lukin told reporters at a news conference.
A MISSING elderly woman is feared to have been killed by a crocodile after cops found possible human remains and a walking stick near a croc-infested creek.
Lukin said police believed Cameron had wandered into the dense bushland, where she became lost, but it was not known if she had entered the water.
"It is my deep regret to inform you that following an extensive search and the discovery of certain items as a result of that search, we have the firm belief that my nan Anne Cameron has passed away in tragic circumstances", Isabella wrote.
Attempts are now being made to positively identify the clothing and the remains.
"We continue to search the area in the hope of finding her alive [but] because of the proximity of these items near the creek bank, we can not rule out the possibility of a crocodile attack".

One fellow resident of Cameron's care facility told ABC she had seen the missing woman walking towards an administration building around 4pm on Tuesday (10 October).
Police have called on the public to stay away from the area which is at the southern end of Four Mile Beach.
Police have not ruled out finding Cameron alive and are still searching the area.
Acting Insp Lukin said he did not wish to comment on how Ms Cameron's family were coping, but confirmed they had been notified of what had been found.
"She will be missed and will always be loved by her family".
The Mowbray River is the location of three sizeable crocodiles regularly seen by motorists travelling between Cairns and Port Douglas.
