Attempted prison escape leaves multiple employees injured


An attempted escape was reported Thursday afternoon at a northeastern North Carolina state prison.

Officials say that fires were set in the prison sewing plant, and that several employees are injured.

Multiple people were injured and schools were placed on lockdown after an attempted escape at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution.

The prison houses just under 900 men, according to its website.

Northside Elementary, Elizabeth City Middle School and Pasquotank County High School have been placed on lockdown.

An official with the Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office said deputies were at the scene and working to figure out what happened.

Jerry Higgins, communications officer for the North Carolina Department of Public Safety, said he didn't know details about the employees' injuries, but that the situation is contained. Calls to Correction Enterprises and the Department of Public Safety Thursday weren't immediately returned.
